Domain, hosting, website and email: what’s the difference?

Four things tend to show up together when a business goes online, and each one does a different job: the domain, hosting, the website and email. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes, and it gets expensive when something breaks.

Domain: the address

Your domain is your business’s address on the internet, like yourcompany.com. Think of the address of a store: it tells people where to find you. It doesn’t store anything; it just points to the right place. You register it for a set period and renew it, and it should be in your company’s name with current contact details.

Hosting: the land

A website has to live somewhere, on a computer that’s always on, called a server. Hosting is the rent you pay for that space. Without it, your domain points at nothing. Good hosting affects your site’s speed, security and reliability.

Website: the storefront

The website is what people actually see: the text, photos, contact details, products and services. It’s the storefront built on that land and found at that address. It can be a single page or a full site, and you can redesign it without changing your domain.

Email: the mailbox

Professional email uses your domain, like hello@yourcompany.com, and runs independently of your website. You can have email without a website, and a website without email. That’s why so many people have working email and a broken website, or the other way around, and can’t figure out why.

How the pieces connect

Settings called DNS tie everything together. Think of it as the internet’s phone book: it says the website lives here and the email lives there. Change DNS carelessly and you can take your site down or stop your email. It pays to have someone you trust looking after this part.

Three habits that prevent headaches

First, keep the domain in your company’s name, with current contact details. Second, keep track of renewals, with reminders or auto-renew. Third, know where each piece is hosted or purchased and store the logins safely. A simple map of where your domain, website and email live solves a surprising share of problems. If you’re not sure where each piece sits for your business, we can help you put that map together.
